Skin Deep: The Acid Test and Why Skin pH is Key!

Skin Deep: The Acid Test and Why Skin pH is Key!

Posted by Bio-First Team on

You might have heard about pH, a measure of acidity and alkalinity on a scale of 1 to 14.

On the scale, pH 7 is neutral and the human body runs at 7.3, very slightly alkaline.

However our skin pH is closer to 5, which is acidic but a healthy level for good skin barrier function and a nice balance of microflora.

Interestingly new-born baby skin pH is about 7, falling rapidly after birth.

For everyone, chronically high skin pH is linked to irritation, acne, redness and dry scaly areas.

This alkaline state is in turn often a result of over-using alkaline products such as soaps and cleansers.

You can help your skin to be pH balanced by using products that have a pH that aligns with the normal skin pH level.

Two wonderful pH balancers for skin are Colloidal Oatmeal and Topical Probiotics.

Look out for these to support hypersensitive skin and chronic conditions, staying clear of soaps cleansers and toners with chemicals.
