What happens to my skin during & after radiation therapy?

Posted by Byron Darroch on

Radiation therapy is a powerful tool in dealing with some cancers.

Because of its power there are some unintended side effects on your body which can include skin damage.

Radiotherapy can cause your skin to become

  • Dry
  • Red
  • Swollen
  • Puffy.

Your skin may take on a sunburned appearance and become photosensitive.

After a few weeks the skin often becomes dry & flaky. It may often peel as it tries to repair itself.

There a few ways to help mitigate these symptoms and aid in a faster recovery.

Your care team is best placed to advise you about these and you can read more here.

*Please note that this is not medical advice and you should always seek such advice from medical professionals.
