What is Eczema and how do you get it?

Posted by Byron Darroch on

Atopic Dermatitis, generally known as Eczema is a common skin condition, especially amongst babies and young kids.

It is a skin condition that is long lasting and typically appears in cycles, flaring up for a period of time before subsiding again.

It is normally marked by itchy, inflamed and irritated dry skin, often presenting as a red rash. Seen most often on the arms, inner elbows, backs of knees and head.

Triggers

Eczema is triggered by an overactive or imbalanced immune system reacting to various irritants. This over activeness results in a breakdown of the normal skin barrier function.

Triggers can include:

  • Chemicals that dry skin
  • Wool
  • Sweating
  • Temperature changes
  • Stress
  • Asthma & others
